Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death by a special tribunal after being found guilty of crimes against humanity.

The court said Hasina had ordered a violent crackdown on last year’s student-led protests, during which the UN estimated that nearly 1400 people were killed; most of them shot by security forces. The verdict came after a months long trial held in her absence. Hasina has been living in exile in India since she was removed from power.

According to the tribunal, Hasina was convicted on three major charges: encouraging violence, issuing direct orders to kill protesters, and failing to stop the atrocities committed during the uprising.

Along with Hasina, the court also announced punishments for two former top officials. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was sentenced to death, while former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a five-year prison term for his role in the crackdown.
