CBI Arrests 35 Year Absconder in Rubaiya Sayeed Kidnapping Case

A special court in Jammu on Tuesday released Shafat Ahmed Shangloo, who was recently arrested by the CBI in the 1989 Rubaiyya Sayeed kidnapping case. The court also rejected the CBI’s request for his custody.

Rejecting the CBI plea for his custody, the special court noted that there was no mention of him in the charge sheet filed by the agency.

Shangloo had been an absconder for 35 years. The CBI had arrested him saying he was involved in the kidnapping of Dr. Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of the then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. According to the case, Shangloo had allegedly conspired with JKLF terrorist Yasin Malik and others. He also had a reward of ₹10 lakh on his head.

The kidnapping took place in 1989, when five JKLF terrorists led by Yasin Malik abducted Rubaiya Sayeed in Srinagar. She was released after five days when five jailed terrorists were freed in exchange.
