
A major tragedy struck Ahmedabad (Gujarat) on Thursday afternoon when an Air India flight AI-171, heading to London (Gatwick), crashed just five minutes after takeoff. The incident occurred near the Meghaninagar area, a densely populated residential locality.
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the passengers on the Air India flight that crashed near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, as per the airline’s passenger list.
The aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner (registration VT-ANB), took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 PM. It was carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
According to the Gujarat State Police Control Room, the crash happened shortly after takeoff and emergency response teams were rushed to the scene. Rescue operations are currently underway, but the extent of damage or casualties is yet to be confirmed.
In an official statement, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said:
“Air India B787 Aircraft VT-ANB, while operating flight AI-171 from (Ahmedabad to Gatwick) has crashed immediately after takeoff from Ahmedabad. There were 242 people on board the aircraft, consisting of 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew”.
