A preliminary investigation report has been released into the deadly Air India plane crash that occurred near Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is probing the incident, revealed details in its initial findings. According to the report, both engines of the 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner shut down within just one second of each other, shortly after takeoff. This sudden engine failure caused the aircraft to lose altitude rapidly and crash into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College.

The cockpit voice recorder captured an exchange between the two pilots during the emergency. One pilot asked the other, “Why did you cut off?” to which the second pilot replied that he hadn’t.

So far, investigators have ruled out bird strikes or any external damage. However, the reason behind the fuel cutoff, which led to the dual engine failure is still under investigation.

The flight, which was headed to London Gatwick, had 242 people on board, including 12 crew members. Tragically, only one passenger survived. Many residents living near the crash site also lost their lives, making the total death toll climb past 260.
