The Indian Embassy in Thailand has issued a travel advisory for Indian citizens, urging them to avoid visiting seven provinces near the Thailand-Cambodia border due to ongoing clashes between the two countries.
What’s Happening?
Tensions have risen between Thailand and Cambodia due to a long standing border dispute. Both nations are claiming the ownership of a stretch of land near an old, historic temple on the border. This disagreement has been going on for years, but now it has turned into violent clashes.
Heavy fighting between both the nations broke out on Thursday, including artillery shelling and rocket attacks along the border. The situation has gone out of control, with both soldiers and civilians being killed or injured on both sides.
Casualties and Damage
On the Thailand side, 14 civilians and one soldier have died, while 46 others were injured. On the Cambodian side, reports say one civilian died and five others were injured. Over 1 lakh civilians have been displaced due to the ongoing fighting, and many have been moved to safer areas.
Travel Advisory for Indians
India has advised its citizens to avoid traveling to the following seven provinces in Thailand, especially near the Cambodia border:
Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat.
The embassy has also asked travellers to keep checking updates from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and other official sources.
Thailand is a popular tourist destination for Indians, with over 2 million Indians visiting in 2024. But due to the current situation, many are now cancelling or postponing their plans.
