On this day in 2002, terrorist attack struck the sacred journey of Shri Amarnath Yatra.
In a brutal act of terror, nine pilgrims were killed and at least 27 others injured when Pakistan backed Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists launched an attack on the Shri Amarnath Yatra’s Nunwan base camp in Pahalgam area of Anantnag district of J&K.
In the early hours of August 6, heavily armed Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists infiltrated the Nunwan base camp at Pahalgam. As hundreds of yatris were in sleep, the attackers hurled grenades and opened fire with AK-47s.
Nine yatris lost their lives, eight on the spot and one later in hospital. Twenty seven others were injured in the deadly attack. The camp was thrown into chaos as cries of pain, fear, and confusion filled the air.
This cowardly attack on unarmed devotees remains one of the darkest moments in the history of the Amarnath Yatra. Today, we remember the innocent lives lost and the spirit of the yatris that remains unshaken by terror.
