Charlie Kirk, 31, a right-wing activist, commentator, and a close supporter of US President Donald Trump, was shot dead on Thursday while speaking to students at Utah Valley University.
Kirk, the head of Turning Point USA, was delivering his talk under a tent displaying banners like “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong” when a gunshot hit him in the neck.
The shot was fired from a nearby building about 20 minutes into his presentation. He was the only person injured in the incident, according to reports.
Soon after the incident, President Trump confirmed Kirk’s death and said American flags would be flown at half-mast until Sunday as a mark of respect.
US President Donald Trump posted:
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the heart of the youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
FBI Director Kash Patel also posted on X, saying:
“We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.”
