In one shocking case from Dallas, U.S, a 50-year old Indian-origin man, Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah ‘Bob’, was brutally beheaded by his Cuban co-worker, Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, outside a motel where both were employed. The fight reportedly started over a faulty washing machine. His Cuban co-worker got angry after being told not to use the faulty machine. Instead of cooling down, he left, came back with a machete, and attacked Nagamallaiah right outside the motel.
The most heartbreaking part? Nagamallaiah’s wife and 18-year old son were inside the motel office and saw everything. They tried to save him, but the attacker chased him, struck him multiple times, and finally beheaded him in front of his own family. Police later caught the killer, still holding the bloodied weapon, and he openly admitted to the crime.
The Consulate General of India in Houston condoled the tragic death of Nagamallaiah and said that it is in touch with the family and is offering all assistance, alongside following the matter closely.
Sadly, this wasn’t the only brutal killing in the US recently. In North Carolina, 23-year old Ukrainian immigrant Iryna Zarutska was travelling on a train when a fellow passenger suddenly stabbed her to death. She never even had the chance to protect herself.
This is the ground reality in America today. The so-called “land of the free” that loves to lecture the rest of the world about law, order, and human rights.
Two immigrants from two different corners of the world- one Indian, one Ukrainian- lost their lives to senseless violence in a country that often claims to be the safest guardian of human rights. These brutal killings highlight how ordinary people in the US face deadly risks even in everyday settings, be it at work or while travelling on a train.
Perhaps, before preaching to others, America should first ensure that its own citizens and immigrant workers don’t get hacked to death in front of their families or stabbed in broad daylight.
