Asia Cup 2025

India’s 7-wicket win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday in Dubai, turned into a huge controversy when the Indian players refused to shake hands with the Pakistani team after the match.

Right after hitting the winning six, skipper Suryakumar Yadav and batter Shivam Dube walked off the field straight to the dressing room, while the rest of the Indian team shook hands with each other. The Pakistani players stood waiting on the field, but India completely ignored them.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Suryakumar said:

“I feel a few things in life are ahead of sportsman spirit. I have told it at the presentation as well. We stand with all the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. We stand with their families also and express our solidarity. As I said, we dedicate this win to our brave armed forces who took part in Operation Sindoor. As they continue to inspire us all, we will try our best to, whenever given the opportunity.”

When asked about the decision not to shake hands with the Pakistan players, he said: “Our government and BCCI were aligned. When we came here, we took a call. We were here to just play the game. We gave them a proper reply.”

The open humiliation rattled Pakistan. Their captain Salman Ali Agha skipped the post match presentation in protest. PCB Chairman and ACC President Mohsin Naqvi called it “utterly disappointing” and said it damaged the spirit of cricket.

“Utterly disappointing to witness the lack of sportsmanship today. Dragging politics into the game goes against the very spirit of sports. Let’s hope future victories are celebrated by all teams with grace”, Naqvi said.

shoaib akhtar Asia Cup 2025

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar expressed his frustration on a TV show:

“I’m speechless. It is disheartening to see and I don’t know what to say. Hats off to India. Just don’t make things political. Cricket match hain isko political mat banao. Hum ne acchi statement di hai aapkee liye. Hum bohut kuchh bol sakte hai. Hoti rehte hain ladayi jhagre, ghar me bhi ho jaati hain. Forget it, move on. It is the game of cricket, shake your hands, show your grace.”

Kamran Akmal and Basit Ali

Ex-Pakistani players Kamran Akmal and Basit Ali were also shocked on live TV, saying they had never seen captains refusing to shake hands even at the toss. “This is a bad example, spoils the game,” said the show anchor as their video went viral.

The fiery gesture from India came after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. Many people in India had even asked the team not to play against Pakistan at all, but since this was an international tournament, the match went ahead. By refusing to shake hands, the Indian players showed the mood of the country.
