Ladakh DGP alleges Sonam Wangchuk links with Pakistan

Ladakh’s Director General of Police (DGP) S.D. Singh Jamwal on Saturday alleged that activist Sonam Wangchuk had links with Pakistan and questioned his visits to neighbouring countries.

At a press conference in Leh, DGP Jamwal said police had earlier arrested a Pakistani PIO (Person of Indian Origin) who was in contact with Wangchuk and was reporting back across the border. “We have records of this. He (Wangchuk) also attended a Dawn event in Pakistan and visited Bangladesh. There is a big question mark on him and investigations are underway,” Jamwal said.

The DGP further alleged that Wangchuk instigated the violence in Leh on September 24, which left four people dead and injured many civilians, police personnel and paramilitary forces. He said the unrest appeared to be an attempt to derail ongoing talks with the Centre.

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on September 26 under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) and has been shifted to Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan.
