Sunetra Pawar Elected NCP Legislature Party Leader

Late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s wife and Rajya Sabha MP Sunetra Pawar has been elected as the leader of the NCP Legislative Party. She will take oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra this evening, ANI reported.

With her elevation, Sunetra Pawar is set to become the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Ajit Pawar, aged 66, tragically passed away on January 28, 2026, in a plane crash near Baramati in Pune district of Maharashtra. His sudden death shocked the state and left a big void in Maharashtra politics.

Following his demise, the Maharashtra government announced three days of state mourning as a mark of respect. Ajit Pawar was cremated on January 29 with full state honours in his home constituency of Baramati.

After consultations within the party, the NCP chose Sunetra Pawar to lead the legislative party, ensuring continuity in governance.
