Kashmir Under Restrictions for Second Day After Protests Over Khamenei’s Killing; Police Appeal for Calm

Strict restrictions continued across Kashmir for the second day on Tuesday after massive protests erupted in the Valley over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

At least 14 people, including six security personnel, were injured during protests on Monday that erupted in Jammu and Kashmir following the killing of Khamenei, PTI reported.

Officials said that 75 rallies were held at various places in the Kashmir Valley, while a few demonstrations were held in the Jammu region as well on Monday.

This is the first time since August 2019 that protests on such a large scale have taken place in Kashmir.

In this backdrop, the Kashmir Zone Police has appealed to the public to maintain peace and restraint, warning against violence and unlawful activities.

In a post on X, the police said that while citizens have the right to express themselves peacefully through lawful means, incidents of rioting, stone-pelting, clashes and disruption of public order reported at some places are unacceptable.

The police warned that violence, damage to property and confrontation with security forces lead to injuries, loss of life, imposition of restrictions, closure of educational institutions and hardships for families, traders, students and daily wage earners.

Appealing to all sections of society to refrain from violence and provocation, the police said strict legal action would be taken against instigators and miscreants involved in unlawful activities.

The authorities, the police added, remain committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the protection of life and property.
