Martyrdom Day: Remembering Kargil Hero and Mahavir Chakra Awardee Captain Anuj Nayyar

Whenever we remember the Kargil War, we think of the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the nation. Their courage and dedication continue to inspire generations. Among these heroes was Mahavir Chakra awardee Captain Anuj Nayyar, who laid down his life at the young age of 24, proving that the nation always comes first.

 

 

Captain Anuj Nayyar was born in Delhi in 1975 and completed his schooling at Army Public School. Driven by his dream of serving the country, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) after school. He later trained at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and was commissioned into the 17 Jat Regiment in June 1997.

 

 

As an officer of the 17 Jat Regiment, Captain Nayyar played a pivotal role in the battle of Point 4875, a strategic peak during the Kargil War. Under intense enemy fire, he led his men to victory, neutralising enemy bunkers and securing the position.

 

During the battle on 7 July 1999, Capt Nayyar killed 9 Pakistani soldiers and destroyed three medium machine gun bunkers. Besides Capt Anuj Nayyar, 28 other soldiers were martyred during this entire operation. His courage in the face of overwhelming odds earned him the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second-highest military decoration for valour.

Captain Anuj Nayyar remains a shining example of the ultimate dedication to the motherland, reminding us that the nation's freedom is guarded by the blood of such brave souls.
